First and foremost in regards to search engine optimization or SEO for short is content, period. If you do not have expert content, and a good amount of it, then why should you rank at the top of a search engine? The answer is you shouldn’t. So try to pick a few words that a potential customer is likely to search for, and try to have your web site content reflect them.

Third is titling your pages accurately. People often make the mistake of placing the name of their company, or what the page is, for example “about us”. Instead, make the title similar to the key word phrase you want to people to search for, then make sure the text on the page reflects on that title.

The rest of it really falls into place on its own. Things have been discussed like heading tags, bolded and italicized words, which help, but again, concentrate on the content and the ranking should follow. Remember also that this is not an over night thing, it can take several months before you come up at all, let alone in a good ranking. It is generally accepted that linking to and from other sites help, but be careful, the spiders are not dumb. They can figure out that you have linked to a bunch of ghost sites to try to “cheat” your way up, which could result in a ban for that search engine, that would be very bad.

Frequent updates are also good for better rankings, when spiders see that things are constantly being updated, that weighs much more than a site that has not been touched in months, or years even. Design your site for the end user, not for the search engines, and after time you will see improvement in your rankings.
